Using handhelds in the classroom…

Well, not quite my classroom, but Rolly’s classroom…

It was very interesting to see my fellow teachers totally enjoy the handheld experience — to the point of acting like my students! (except for me, of course, I am always level headed!).

252870.jpgThis is an example of a colleague hard at work. Our teacher told us that we had to familiarize ourselves with grafitti (in other words, how to form letters on your handheld so you can still write even in the absence of a keyboard…). So, he assigned us to practice with a program called “Giraffe” — actually, it is more like a game where the letters and symbols fall from the sky and the only way to blast them out of existence is to form the letters or symbols on the correct writing area of your handheld. So, ladies and gentlemen, if you think this exercise was easy, think again. Just look at my colleague’s photo and you will see intense concentration — especially since we had to score 1400 and above.

252869.jpgYours truly scored 1605, but the record stood for only 5 minutes when Arlene scored a 1740 (!@#$%^&*)! Maricel, on the other hand, was very depressed when her score was accidentally reset — she was sizzling hot with 300 points! :-D

We were very happy to see Chris join the class — he is our link to the upper school. He seemed very interested in using the handheld in the classroom, 252866.jpgespecially when we talked about probes and graphing calculators (which were available for the handheld). Everyone in class helped him get started because he is really starting from the basics — as in how to turn it on, what a stylus is, what the programs are, how to write grafitti…..Here is a photo of Arlene showing him the wonders off beaming programs and documents.

And lastly, here is a photo of our teacher Rolly and student Rekha, hard at work. She is beaming her Giraffe score (which was top secret).

As for me, I don’t have a photo. It was a bad hair and bad face day… ;-)

Great entry. Have you used Giraffe again since the class? What’s your new record? What do you think of the handheld grad. class so far?
